A Tribute to Fr Ordhran Furlong RIP
It was with profound shock and deep sadness that we learned of the sudden death of Fr Ordhran Furlong on Thursday morning, when he did not arrive to celebrate morning Mass. His passing has come as a tremendous blow to his family, to Bishop Ger Nash, Bishop Denis Brennan who appointed him to St Aidan’s Cathedral, to his brother priests, and to the faithful of the Diocese of Ferns.
Although Fr Ordhran had left St Aidan’s Cathedral some years ago, he remained closely connected to Enniscorthy, returning often to celebrate baptisms, weddings and funerals. During his time in Enniscorthy he was a very popular and much-loved priest. He built strong relationships with parishioners and was deeply committed to the spiritual and pastoral life of the community.
Among his lasting contributions to St Aidan’s Cathedral was the restoration of the reredos of the altar, carefully painted so that the saints and sacred figures could once again be clearly seen and appreciated. The six brass altar candles were also beautifully reconditioned during his time there, visible reminders of his care for the dignity and beauty of the liturgy.
From Enniscorthy, Fr Ordhran went on to serve as chaplain in Wexford General Hospital, where he brought comfort and compassion to patients and families at difficult moments. Last September, he was appointed to New Ross — fittingly, the place where his priestly ministry both began and, now, has come to its earthly close.
Over the years, Fr Ordhran served faithfully in Templeudigan, Gorey, Tara Hill, Rathnure, Rathgarogue, Cushinstown and many other parishes. In each place he left a legacy of dedication, kindness and priestly devotion.
Our heartfelt sympathies go especially to his parents, Tom and Angela; his sisters Niamh and Majella; his nephews and nieces; and his large extended family of whom he was so proud and to whom he ministered so faithfully. We also extend our sympathy to the priests and people he served throughout the Diocese of Ferns, and to our own community here in Enniscorthy, who will feel this loss so deeply.
May Fr Ordhran now be reunited with his brother Tom and with all those he knew and served so faithfully in his priestly ministry.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.”
May he rest in peace
